Christina Rossetti greetings cards
Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830 – 1894) was an English poet who wrote a variety of romantic, devotional and children’s poems. Although her father Gabriele Rossetti and brother Dante Gabriel Rossetti were also poets, Christina established a reputation in her own right at a time when women were more often expected to be seen than heard. She was opposed to slavery (in the American South), cruelty to animals (animal experimentation was at that time very common), and the exploitation of girls in under-age prostitution. She was ambivalent about women’s suffrage but many scholars have identified feminist themes in her poetry. Feminists have held up her as symbol of constrained female genius and she was considered by many to be the greatest female poet of the 19th-century who influenced many poets and writers that followed.
