Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), was an American writer, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, historian and transcendentalist. This quotation is taken from Thoreau's book 'Walden' of 1854, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. This, and his essay 'Resistance to Civil Government', an argument for disobedience to an unjust state, are among his best known works.
